Zachary LA Homes for Sale – In the 1880s, Darel Zachary gave part of his land to the Illinois Central Railroad for a train depot. Depots were being built every five miles or so from New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee. This was the day of Spanish land grants and flat pastureland known as “The Plains,” and Zachary was a farming community. During the 1880s and 1890s, this wild town had six barrooms along Main Street. Incorporated in 1889, the government was located in the center of town, where it remains. In 1902, a fire destroyed nearly every business in Zachary. The city rebuilt and by 1930, Zachary was considered a great place to raise a family by both the New Orleans and Baton Rouge papers.
